Garcia, Hernández, Sawhney & Bermudez Equity Partner Nitasha Sawhney served as a moderator at the Increasing Diversity in the Legal Profession conference at Chabot College on March 22, 2013. Ms. Sawhney moderated the session, “When You Dream: The Community College Pipeline to Law School”.
The panel featured Honorable Diana Becton of the Contra Costa County Superior Court, Honorable Thang Nguyen Barrett of the Santa Clara County Superior Court and Otis Bruce Jr., the Supervising Deputy District Attorney for Marin County. All of the panelists, including Ms. Sawhney, attended community colleges prior to their careers in the legal profession. Ms. Sawhney received an Associates of Arts degree from Irvine Valley Community College prior to attending UC Berkeley for her Bachelor of Arts and UC Davis for her juris doctorate.
The panelists discussed the opportunities and challenges they faced on their path from community college to law school. The conference was hosted by Chabot College Law & Democracy Program, the State Bar Council on Access & Fairness (COAF), the Law School Admission Council, and Street Law, Inc.
Ms. Sawhney represents community colleges on a broad range of matters including board governance, PERB actions, labor negotiations, employee discipline and training and prevention in sexual harassment and discrimination and ethics.
