GHSB Proudly Supports Research on First Latinas Licensed to Practice Law

July 13, 2015

Garcia, Hernandez, Sawhney & Bermudez, LLP is proud to support The First Latina Lawyers – Las Primeras Abogadas, a groundbreaking project by former GHSB Partner, Dolores Atencio, which documents the first Latinas licensed to practice law in the United States. Dolores is a former President of the Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA), former chair and lifetime member of the HNBA’s Commission on the Status of Latinas in the Legal Profession and is currently a Visiting Scholar, Latino Center for Community Engagement and Scholarship, at the University of Denver. GHSB was the first law firm to contribute to her work in her new position.

A description of her project and summary of her research to date, and information on how others can support her work, is available at The First Latina Lawyers.  Dolores’ first work on Latina lawyers was created in 1993, Las Primeras, at the suggestion of GHSB Founder Mary Hernandez, who at the time was the Convention Chair for the HNBA’s Annual Convention. Mary is also a former President of the HNBA and a lifetime member of the HNBA’s Commission on the Status of Latinas in the Legal Profession. Dolores’ work was featured at the 1993 HNBA Convention in San Francisco and then later was converted into the first 50 minute documentary on Latina lawyers. GHSB salutes the continuing incredible dedication and hard work by Dolores Atencio for more than a decade to document the history and contributions of our nation’s earliest Latina lawyers!
