Napa Valley Unified School District Offers Insights into Effective School District Governance

As General Counsel to a number of school districts throughout California, we are often asked for examples of good governance models and practices. A new report by the California Collaborative on District Reform highlights effective governance practices by one of our long-time clients, the Napa Valley Unified School District. In 2018, Dr. Rosanna Mucetti became NVUSD’s first woman and first Hispanic Superintendent in Napa’s history.

Serving as the General Counsel to NVUSD during the entirety of Superintendent Dr. Rosanna Mucetti’s tenure, we have had a front row seat to observe the incredible hard work and dedication of Dr. Mucetti and her seven member Board of Education. From onboarding new Board members so that they can hit the ground running as effective governance team members, to annually reviewing and refining Board norms and the District’s strategic plan, all while constantly communicating with the District’s community partners and the public with transparency and integrity through good times and challenges, NVUSD’s experiences offer positive and hopeful examples for other governance teams.
