Ms. Mary T. Hernández is a founding partner of Garcia Hernández Sawhney, LLP and heads the San Francisco Bay Area offices. Mary serves as outside General Counsel to educational institutions as well as nonprofit organizations.

Mary’s clients include the Gilroy Unified School District, Hayward Unified School District, John Swett Unified School District, Napa Valley Unified School District, New Haven Unified School District, San Leandro Unified School District and West Park Elementary School District, as well as the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE), EJE Academy Charter Schools and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.

Mary has been engaged in public interest advocacy her entire legal career. She served as the third female and youngest President of the Hispanic National Bar Association in 1994 and was twice elected to the Board of Education for the San Francisco Unified School District – in 1996 and 2000. After having served as a staff attorney for the Multicultural Education Training and Advocacy nonprofit and helping CABE’s first Parent Information Resource Center (under CABE’s Project Inspire) get off the ground, Mary was one of the inaugural mentors in the English Learner Leadership and Legacy Institute first convening. ELLLI is a project Californians Together in collaboration with CABE designed to support the next generation of English Learner advocates in California.

Mary received her Juris Doctorate from Stanford University, during which time she spent a semester in Sydney, Australia working for the New South Wales Branch of the Australian Labour Party and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University, during which time she spent a semester in London working for a Member of Parliament in the British House of Commons.
