Garcia Hernández Sawhney, LLP welcomes PETER JANIAK as Of Counsel. Mr. Janiak comes to GHS after a long and distinguished career that includes over 20 years with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco, California, several years serving as Chief Counsel for the California School Employees Association and private law firms, and experience as a private investigator. Mr. Janiak focuses his legal practice primarily in the areas of employment discrimination and public-sector labor relations.
“We are delighted to have an attorney of Peter’s status and depth of experience join the firm” said Managing Partner Bonifacio Garcia.
Peter obtained his law degree, with an emphasis on labor law, from UC Davis. Before law school, Peter served as a paratrooper and chaplain’s assistant in Germany, entered a Trappist monastery in Northern California and worked his way through college as a card-carrying member of the Teamsters. During his first summer at law school, he volunteered as a union organizer with Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers in Delano. Peter indicates that his experiences as a Teamster and volunteer union organizer allowed him to learn first-hand the proper application of labor organization to improve workers’ rights. He also became even more invested in political action and social development at a grass-roots level.
Upon graduation from UC Davis, King Hall, Peter joined the Appellate Section of the EEOC in Washington, D.C. This was shortly after the passage of Title VII (Civil Rights Act of 1964), which gave him to opportunity to continue working toward improving worker’s rights.
